What's the Difference Between the Garmin Edge 1050 and the Edge 1040

The Garmin Edge 1050 offers many new features and improvements, including:

  • New improvements to GroupRide let riders stay connected with in-ride messaging, live locations and incident detection alerts2 that can notify and route fellow riders to a cyclist in need of help.
  • Cyclists can also add some competition to their ride with in-ride leaderboards for climbs, plus witty postride awards, including Speed Racer (highest max speed), Chatterbox (most heavily using the GroupRide messaging feature), Worker Bee (most time spent pedaling) and more.
  • Receive road hazard alerts on-screen that are reported by fellow cyclists – like potholes or fallen trees – and even contribute hazards to help alert other riders.
  • Refreshed Design: Angled casing and discrete, all-metal buttons, plus a replaceable quarter-turn mount are complemented by a vivid, 3.5” liquid crystal display.
  • Garmin Pay Contactless Payments: Don’t worry about digging into your pocket to pull out cash; breeze through mid-ride café or snack stops with a tap of the Edge.
  • Built-In Speaker: Hear workout and navigation prompts and alert riders and pedestrians ahead using an on-device bike bell.
  • On-Device Course Creator: Easily create courses right on the device using the responsive touchscreen and toggle different map overlays on or off.
  • Surface Type: See paved or unpaved roadways on the Edge while riding and get alerts for upcoming unpaved sections.
  • Ride-Specific Routing: Get routing suited to a specific ride—whether it’s mountain, gravel or road.
  • Map Manager with Wi-Fi Connectivity: Add, swap, or update additional maps via Wi-Fi right on the cycling computer.

Solar-technology is not available with the Edge 1050 cycling computer. Because it offers a much brighter display, depending on what features a rider uses, it may offer less battery life than the Edge 1040/1040 Solar.

Great upgrade to my last

"Great upgrade to my last bike computer, a little more than I need but its helped up my fitness level and health with more useful data to track and keep me in-line with my pace."

shines bright on screen, but not so on navigation and path planning

"Absolutely stunning display and workable user interface. However, Garmin has a long path ahead in mastering bike route planning suggestions and navigation. Rest of the features are as good as 1040. So, if you are not keen on latest and the greatest, save your dough and go for 1040."

Sudipta B. (4/5)

One excellent bike computer

"I’ve owned many Garmin cycling computers over the years but this one, the 1050 is the best yet. I recently decided to upgrade from my 830 to this model primarily due to the fact that I’ve upgraded to a bike with electronic shifting. This 1050 syncs with it and allows me to see gearing stats and battery levels. Initially, I thought the size of this 1050 was too large but after using it for about a week of daily riding, I’ve come to appreciate it. It displays an amazing amount of data with a display that’s easy on the eyes in any type of light. The battery on the 830 was amazing. The battery on the 1050 is excellent as well. The user interface and os are very intuitive to use and extremely responsive to user input. I plan on using and enjoying this 1050 until Garmin releases the next best thing!"

Jeff L. (5/5)

great upgrade.

"I didnt test it to much yet. but upgrading from 1040 is worth it. It is very phone like. fast, great screen, power and data seams much more accurate and updated more frequently. i had an issue with 1040 and rear radar light disconnecting, and I dont have that issue so far with 1050. great product!"
